Q&A: QB Garrett Nussmeier reflects on LSU's win over UCLA
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had another outstanding performance on Saturday night against UCLA, posting 352 yards and three touchdowns on 32 of 44 passing as the Tigers took the 34-17 win and improved to 3-1 on the year. On an offense that continues to rely on the passing attack, Nussmeier has been steady with his decision making and continues to lead LSU forward towards conference play.
Nussmeier met with the media after the win. Here's everything he said .
On Brian Kelly's energy...
"He's definitely very high energy and has been trying to get us going. He's stepped up his energy level, you could say. He's the leader of our program and he knows however he acts will be reciprocated by us and it has been awesome to see."
On LSU's offensive success...
"We did a great job in general. The offensive line did a great job protecting me and keeping me upright. Guys were making plays off rip. We made a big emphasis off rip to get off to a fast start. It was important for us not only to get down the field on the first drive, but finish it off."
On his dad being at the game...
"He was here. He had to get out early because they play the Saints tomorrow and I'll be there for that."
"It was really cool. He doesn't get to make too many games so it was really special. Him, my brother and I were all out there pre game so that was a cool moment."
On the 90-yard drives in the second half...
"It's just focusing on each play. No moment is too big for us as an offense and we did a good job of executing and taking it step by step."
On the playcalling...
"Coach Sloan does an unbelievable job as a coordinator putting us in different situations, understanding how teams are going to attack us and doing the opposite. When guys are playing back, we hit our checkdowns and we can drive down the field. Coach Sloan always has us in the right place for us to make plays."
Mason Taylor...
"He's awesome. He's a special talent. He's someone I constantly look to and he constantly delivers. He's a great leader on our team and he's doing things right on the field and off the field. He truly cares about the game and he wants to be great for his teammates and that's the best thing about Mason."
Aaron Anderson...
"He's special. He can do a lot o different things and we've seen that the past couple of weeks, whether that's making someone miss or a deep shot over the top. He's been very good for us and continues to step up."
On Harold Perkins injury...
"He's a leader on our team and a special talent and my prayers are with him. It's a tough situation and I hope it works out. I know God has a plan and that would be my message to him."
On progress of the LSU team...
"We've done a great job focusing on getting better. Mistakes are going to happen. We're not perfect and it's about learning from the mistakes and not letting it happen again. We've done a much better job of not making the mistakes to kill drives."
On the running backs as receivers...
"The backs did an unbelievable job with the ball in their hands. When guys are dropping out and you can get it to those guys underneath and let them make a play and Kaleb, Caden, and Josh all did that tonight."
Preparing for the heat today...
"The training staff and strength staff did a great job having us prepared. I felt like we had energy in the second half. Guys were healthy and it helped us a lot."
