MOREHEAD, Ky. (WYMT) - Rep. Hal Rogers (R-5th District) announced he secured grant money for the Morehead State University Space Science Center.

The nearly $10 million grant will go toward upgrading operations.

"That money is going toward a spacecraft payload operations center here at the space science center. What we will be able to do is actually operate these pillars or scientific instruments for other companies," said Operations Lead Chloe Hart.

Congressman Hal Rogers said Morehead State University's impact on the region cannot be overstated.

"We're looking for a new way of living, because we lost the coal mines. The space program is uniquely qualified to take part in it. They are willing and abled and qualified," said Rep. Hal Rogers.

Rogers also honored members of the aerospace program who played a part in saving NASA's Odysseus mission.

Morehead State University is reportedly one of four colleges in a partnership with NASA allowing students to work alongside them.

Officials have created a place where nearby students interested in aerospace can achieve greatness in the field while staying close to home.

"Many students think aerospace and think that they have to move away and not live in Kentucky to have those amazing, fulfilling careers. It shows that you can be a leader right here in Kentucky," said Operations Lead Chloe Hart.

Congressman Hal Rogers is working to secure another $7 million in funding for the center.
