YEMASSEE, S.C. (WSAV) – Representative Nancy Mace (SC-01) sent a letter to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and National Institute of Health (NIH) demanding a briefing after a recent escape of 43 monkeys from the Alpha Genesis facility.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, November 7, has resulted in a continued search and rescue operation. 32 of the primates have been recovered so far, with 13 still on the loose.

Mace's office announced the inquiry on Tuesday.

"For years, Alpha Genesis has racked up federal contracts and taxpayer dollars while consistently violating animal welfare laws and exposing the public to dangerous escapes," said Mace. "NIH and USDA need to step up and ensure South Carolinians don't bear the risk of this lab's negligence."

The Republican congresswoman's office has demanded a full briefing from the NIH and USDA, including:

A complete breakdown of active contracts and inspections with Alpha Genesis

Documentation of communication with Alpha Genesis regarding the recent monkey escape

Immediate corrective actions to enhance oversight and safety at Alpha Genesis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday he will appoint Republican former Congressman Lee Zeldin, who often voted against legislation on green issues including a measure to stop oil companies from price gouging, to head the Environmental Protection Agency. "He will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet," Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. Trump, a Republican, will likely look to reverse many rules administered by the EPA on the burning of fossil fuels including one curbing carbon emissions from power plants and another slashing such emissions from vehicles.
