SAN DIEGO, CA — One San Diego university was ranked among the top 100 in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2025 Best Colleges rankings released Tuesday.

The University of California, San Diego ranked No. 29 among the nation's best colleges, according to the rankings. UC San Diego was also named the sixth best public university in the country.

"UC San Diego's consistent recognition by U.S. News as one of the nation's top public universities reflects our unwavering commitment to shaping the future," Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said in a statement.

"We are especially proud of our advancements in engineering, as well as our rising impact in innovation and social mobility. These rankings highlight the strength of our academic community and the drive of our students to channel their passions into real-world impact. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to providing equitable, world-class opportunities for the changemakers of tomorrow."

The rankings evaluated 1,500 colleges and universities using up to 17 measures of academic quality, the digital media company said in a news release. This year's edition prioritized social mobility and post-graduate success.

As for the top overall colleges in the country, Princeton University in New Jersey ranked first, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in Massachusetts in second and third, respectively. Stanford University in California ranked fourth and Yale University in Connecticut ranked fifth.

The report also included specialized rankings such as the best value schools, most innovative colleges, top performers on social mobility, and historically Black colleges and universities, as well as universities with the greatest commitment to undergraduate teaching. Other specialty rankings included programs that enhance student experiences, including first-year experiences, service learning, studying abroad, and undergraduate research and creative projects.

UC San Diego also ranked No. 177 in best value schools, according to the report.

As for other San Diego area schools, San Diego State University tied for No. 109 in national universities, tied for No. 52 in top public schools, and ranked No. 162 in best value schools. The University of San Diego tied for No. 109 in national universities and ranked No. 53 in best value schools.

"As the second-largest city in California, San Diego affords students at colleges and universities in the surrounding metro area ample resources," U.S. News & World Report said on its website. "The pleasant weather appeals to students, though the research institutions and many liberal arts programs are big draws as well. More than the climate, the area's culture and many landmarks like the San Diego Zoo make for a well-rounded college education."
