Sasha Calle on What Drives Her: Manifesting Her Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams

Sasha Calle knows the value of taking up space. It's a principle that was instilled in her by the women in her family and one that has guided her through the entertainment industry. "I'm a powerful woman," she tells Variety.

Growing up in Boston, the Colombian American actor and musician caught glimpses of other Latinas like her on film and TV. Examples of strong women on and off screen, including her mother, made her believe that she could be anyone and do anything.

In the years since, she's become an inspiration for a new generation. "Being the first Latin woman to play Supergirl, that's so beautiful," she says of the 2023 film "The Flash," her feature film debut. "You work so hard and the schedules can be so hectic, but then there are moments where you go, 'Oh wow, I am here.' This is something so beautiful that I wished for when I was a kid. I am my ancestors' wildest dreams, and I am very proud of that."

These days, Calle is constantly on the move, juggling multiple projects and excitedly filling up notepads with lyrics and ideas. When it comes to cars, the multi-hyphenate appreciates BMW's premium quality.

"I think women belong in really powerful cars," says Calle, who identifies with the new 2025 BMW X3 – a sleek and stylish model with a bold Vegas Red metallic and black exterior that commands attention and features understated black leather interior, a nod to her own relaxed menswear-inspired style. "Red is a color that symbolizes strength," she says. "It's a color that's resonated a lot in my life."

As she's established her acting career, Calle has returned to her musical pursuits, which makes the BMW X3 a must-have. "It has an incredible sound system. As a musician, when I finish a song in a studio, I need to hear it," she says. "I want to feel that reward, and it's that moment in my vehicle, connecting my phone, tapping the song, and listening to it as I drive home — there's something so satisfactory about it."

Another hobby she enjoys is going on adventures with her beloved dog, a Great Dane named Dragon. "He's very big, so he needs a very big and powerful car to hop right inside. The BMW X3 has lots of space," she says. "I love driving, but you have to have a car that really suits you to love driving. There's something freeing about driving somewhere with your favorite music, windows down and just forgetting about everything. I find that I am quite present when I'm driving, which is really beautiful."

BMW praises Calle as a multi-talented actor and musician as well as an advocate for Latina and queer representation. "She's our perfect pairing because she is a multi-talented, multi-hyphenate," the company tells Variety in a statement. "A singer/musician, an actor, a Latina, a daughter. While it's a lot of responsibility, all these roles seem equally important to her. She is true to herself and her roots — never compromising, always authentic. She has a versatility that you don't often see and a power that is palpable."

Calle, who stars in "On Swift Horses" and "In the Summers," is always looking ahead and living her life boldly and authentically — practices she learned from her mentors and the female directors she's worked with. "Having powerful women in your life can remind you of who you are," she says. "The women in my life, and all the people that I love in my life, make me feel incredibly powerful and remind me of who I am — that really fuels me."
