The City of Scranton is helping prepare the next generation of first responders with the donation of a 2015 Ford Taurus Interceptor, a former Scranton Police Department (SPD) patrol vehicle, to the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County (CTCLC). Officials delivered the vehicle to CTCLC, 3201 Rockwell Ave., Scranton, on Friday, Nov. 15, 2024.

"This donation is an investment from the City of Scranton in hands-on training and education provided by the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County," Mayor Paige G. Cognetti said. "This vehicle, which served our residents well, will become a teaching tool with that will positively impact CTC students."

"Partnerships like this are critical to improving the training of upcoming first responders and helping them obtain the basic skills needed to serve their communities," Scranton Police Chief Thomas F. Carroll added.

The Protective Services Program at CTCLC offers students the training required to perform entry-level duties as police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and other services provided by emergency responders. As part of the curriculum, students must complete assessments that are developed by the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute, or NOCTI.

"We are thrilled!" CTCLC Protective Services Instructor Jonathan Coyne said. "This donation will provide the students with a great opportunity to practice real-world tasks for the Protective Services Program. The vehicle will also be used for traffic control and students' safety during after-school events hosted at the CTCLC."

Before the former SPD Interceptor is ready for the Protective Services program, students in other CTCLC disciplines including the Automotive Technology programs will be able to review and, if necessary, repair and modify the car for their needs.

Incorporated in 1866, the City of Scranton has a population of approximately 80,000 residents and is the sixth-largest municipality in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Scranton City Hall is located at 340 N. Washington Ave., Scranton, PA 18503. Residents requiring services should visit www.scrantonpa.gov.
