6 People Share What It's Like to Drive a Ford Electric Vehicle

Generation E isn't about how old you are or your status in life — it's about embracing the electric vehicle lifestyle.

For many Ford EV owners, the switch wasn't just about practicality. It was a choice driven by love for the brand, a desire to go green, and interest in the latest technology. From convenient features to sleek designs — not to mention the joy of skipping the gas station — a Ford electric vehicle can make life easier.

Meet six drivers from across the US who are loving their Mustang Mach-E® SUV, the Ford electric take on the classic Pony car, and the F-150® Lightning® all-electric truck.

Patrick Anderson and Liv Leigh: Tech-savvy innovators embracing the future of driving

Patrick Anderson and Liv Leigh are among the first Mustang® Mach-E® owners. The tech-savvy couple was drawn to electric vehicles for their innovative design and eco-friendliness. Leigh, an industrial engineer raised in a Mustang-loyal family, felt a deep connection to the brand.

Leigh fell in love at first sight with the Mustang Mach-E, appreciating its design and the Ford nod to the iconic Mustang heritage. The couple reserved one in 2019 to explore their options, but its performance, spacious interior, and tech-forward features convinced them to place an order in 2020. They later upgraded from their First Edition model to a 2022 Mustang Mach-E GT model.

"It's the best money we ever spent," Leigh said.

One standout feature for Leigh, who drives adaptively due to a disability, is the vehicle's ergonomic design. The large touchscreen and controls ensure easy navigation, and the quiet, smooth ride, range, and spirited performance of the Mustang Mach-E won them over.

Patrick loves the cost savings — they've found that charging at home has been cheaper for them than filling up with gas, especially since they installed solar panels on their Southern California home.

"The savings are too good to be true," Anderson said.

The couple enjoys road trips and documents their journeys on their YouTube channel, sharing experiences to help others transition to EVs. For them, the Mustang Mach-E isn't just an SUV; it represents nostalgia, performance, community, and a path to a more sustainable future.

Yvette Harris: A DEI advocate driving change on and off the road

Two years ago, Yvette Harris spotted a beautiful car that she couldn't get out of her head. When she discovered it was a Mustang® Mach-E® SUV, she had to try it. She rented the vehicle for a few months to ensure the EV was the right fit.

She was hooked after going on a road trip in the Mustang Mach-E to Philadelphia and meeting other owners at a charging station. She bought her own model and named it Blanco.

The vehicle's convenient tech features made her purchase decision easy. Harris loves the voice command recognition, the Ford hands-free highway driving technology (Ford BlueCruise), and one-pedal driving.

Harris frequently drives long distances to visit family and watch her favorite women's basketball teams play. Her travel hack is finding locations with EV charging stations on-site, and some hotels even offer free charging.

When Harris travels, she finds public charging stations on the SYNC4A® system. If anyone there needs help, she's the first one to step up to educate new owners about charging their EVs. Otherwise, she'll pass the time while she's parked and charging to watch videos. If her granddaughter is along for the ride, she'll take advantage of the vehicle's large touchscreen to play some of her favorite games.

Her biggest commute is 35 miles, twice a week, to her office, where she works in DEI.

She said the "Generation-E" community is inclusive, or "e-clusive." She called the members bold, innovative, tech-savvy, and unafraid of change.

"They're all different ages — they're not young, they're not old, they're Generation E," Harris said.

Matt Linn: Real estate pro building his family's future with the F-150®®

The Ford F-150 Lightning is the ultimate family vehicle for Matt Linn, a father of two. He uses it for everything, from getting to real estate showings to towing his camper and powering his kids' bouncy house.

Linn, a self-proclaimed EV enthusiast, traded in an electric SUV that his family had outgrown for the F-150 Lightning in July 2023.

When he got the truck, he ran a custom building business, and the large cargo space made it the perfect work companion. Now he and his wife are realtors, and they use the F-150 Lightning for their everyday meetings and errands (averaging 100 to 150 miles a day), and to tow their camper for weekend trips. The Pro Power Onboard* electricity in the truck powers the family's camping trips. There's also an available Wi-Fi® hotspot and work surface by the passenger seat, so he can work from anywhere.

Linn loves the truck's spaciousness. His kids sit comfortably in the back, and he can fit his 8-year-old son's sports equipment and 1-year-old's stroller in the frunk. Extra space in the frunk holds takeout so the smell of more fragrant foods doesn't fill up the rest of the vehicle. On the road, open sight lines mean he can keep an eye on the kids in the backseat.

For Linn, owning an EV has also simplified the tasks that come with truck ownership. Going to the gas station and routine maintenance like oil changes and transmission checks are a thing of the past.

"All that stuff — you just don't have it in an EV, so you don't have to worry about it," Linn said.

Dr. Sian Proctor: An astronaut's earth-friendly mission with the Mustang® Mach-E®

Dr. Sian Proctor's trip to space changed her perspective on Earth. In September 2021, the geoscientist, professor, and artist became the first female commercial spaceship pilot on the all-civilian Inspiration4 mission. Her futuristic, space-themed art and poetry earned her a spot on the groundbreaking mission.

When she returned, she committed to being a better environmentalist, beginning with efforts to offset her carbon use. "I purchased my vehicle in December of 2021 as a holiday gift to myself after returning from space." She named her Mustang Mach-E Pony Boy, typically driving it in the sportier "Unbridled" mode.

"When you say you have an all-electric Mustang vehicle that's in the SUV category, people scratch their heads," she said. "Then you show them, and they're like, 'This is amazing.'"

Proctor's favorite features include the light-filled panoramic fixed-glass roof, available Ford BlueCrusie hands-free highway driving, and the available spacious cargo area for her art supplies. Most of all, she loves that the Mustang Mach-E makes her 30-minute commute even easier. And after charging at home overnight, she doesn't need to worry about stopping for gas.

Proctor is encouraged that more people are considering how their choices impact the environment and are switching to electric vehicles.

"I know that's why I am part of Generation E," she said.

Kevin King: A tech enthusiast powering his world with the F-150®®

As soon as Kevin King heard about the Ford F-150 Lightning, he signed up to upgrade his gas truck to the new electric version. As an early tech adopter, he was eager to switch to electric and trusted Ford to deliver a great product launch.

His F-150 Lightning feels similar to his previous truck, with some key differences unique to an EV. First, it drives more quietly than his previous gas vehicles, as the loud engine-revving and air conditioning noises are gone. But that doesn't mean the truck lacks power; it still accelerates quickly, he said.

He also appreciates that the truck itself is a source of electricity. The Home Backup Power* means the truck can serve as an emergency power source for up to three days. King said that would have come in handy when he lived in a town in New Jersey where power outages were common. And when he's away from home, King loves that the truck has the Pro Power Onboard feature with strategically placed outlets for things like tailgating with live TV or serving coffee and food.

When he's on the road, the vehicle navigation can suggest when and where he should charge the vehicle. He can use chargers within the Blue Oval NetworkTM and after powering up, the payment processes to his account automatically.

King, who works from home in case management for a major insurer, uses his truck, affectionately named Silver Lightning, to help friends move, tow his motorcycle, and run daily errands. He's now known at his local grocery store for having curbside orders delivered straight into his spacious frunk.

He said he enjoys educating people on the road and as part of the Sunshine State F-150 Lightning Club.

"We're a band of brothers and sisters, those of us who have this vehicle," King said. "We're very supportive of each other."
