Second of two east Columbus murder suspects arrested, both get massive bonds

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – The second of two suspects wanted in an east Columbus murder has been arrested after remaining at large for nearly two months.

Court documents stated that Shavez Hargrave, 29, was placed in custody Tuesday and was charged with the murder of 27-year-old Remarcus Smith-Heagler, who was shot during an alleged drug deal gone wrong.

Police said that on Aug. 21, Smith-Heagler, Hargrave and Dewarin Powell met near the 5100 block of Cedar Drive in the Pine Hills neighborhood. Witnesses told police that Powell and Hargrave attempted to rob Smith-Heagler and shot him as he was trying to escape.

Smith-Heagler reportedly crashed his car about a block up the road and was found just before 9 p.m., suffering from a gunshot wound while seated in the driver's seat. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead two days later .

Powell, 22, was taken to Franklin County Jail and was issued a $3 million bond in municipal court on Tuesday. Hargrave faced a judge Wednesday morning and was issued a $1.5 million bond. Powell is next scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 21 while Hargrave will next appear in court on Oct. 25
