Seven Goals In 15 Games - Meet Celtic Star Nicolas Kühn
Zero points from four Champions League games. The less-than-ideal campaign continues for RB Leipzig in the Champions League. On Tuesday, the Red Bulls were smashed 3-1 by Scottish giants Celtic at Celtic Park, and it was a former Leipzig youth player that would be the hero: Nicolas Kühn.
The German winger scored twice (35', 45') to help Celtic spark a comeback win after Christoph Baumgartner (23') gave the visitors the lead. Then, in the 72nd minute, Reo Hatate put the final nail in the coffin to secure the Glasgow side a 3-1 win over the German visitors.
For Kühn, it was precisely the sort of performance he was looking for after Celtic had been smashed 7-1 in the Champions League earlier this season. "You mustn't forget that this is the first Champions League appearance for many of the players in our team," Kühn said in an interview with Transfermarkt this week. "Losing to last year's finalists is no disgrace, even if the defeat was too heavy in the end."
The right-winger also pointed out that the club drew essential lessons from that result to take a point of Atalanta in a 0-0 draw. "We were much more compact defensively and must now work on bringing our attacking qualities to the pitch even more effectively," Kühn said in the Transfermarkt interview.
Undoubtedly, the Leipzig game feels like the next step in Celtic's and Kühn's Champions League evolution. Signed for €3.5 million ($3.8 million) from Austrian side Rapid Vienna last January, Kühn has now scored nine goals and ten assists in 16 games across all competitions for Celtic this season.
First developed by Leipzig and then Bayern Munich where he played under now Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, Kühn is certainly playing his way back in the spotlight after falling off the radar a bit. The now 24-year-old made the unorthodox decision to move to first Ajax in the Netherlands and then Austria to develop as a player.
Then came the transfer to Celtic. The move to Scotland, however, appears to have paid off for Kühn, and his performance against Leipzig will have put the 24-year-old back on the radar in his native country.
"It's difficult to put into words what happened out there tonight," Kühn said to UEFA.com after being voted the player of the match. "We played an amazing game, and we're really happy with the three points."
The forward also praised the match against Leipzig as a big step forward for his club. "Against Atalanta, we did a good job defensively," Kühn said. "The counterattack and the final ball was missing, but it was there tonight. We want to win the next game and go further in this competition."
With seven points from four games, Celtic now sits in 13th place in the Champions League table—enough to reach the next round of the competition in the new year.
On a personal level, it will be interesting to see whether Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann will pick up on Kühn's performances. Germany does have depth on the wings, but Nagelsmann is also happy to experiment. With the country already qualified for the next round of the Nations League, it will be interesting to see whether Kühn will be called up to the national team.
