Showers & thunderstorms in the forecast for Kansas City. Fall weather to come next week

Temperatures across the Kansas City metro will be cooler Saturday, with widespread heavy rainfall expected throughout the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

Multiple rounds of showers and storms are likely Saturday through Monday, the NWS said on X . Saturday evening storms could be strong to severe with the possibility of damaging winds.

The weather service's Storm Prediction Center has marked much of the metro under a marginal risk for severe weather Saturday evening. Stronger storms are most likely between 4 p.m. and midnight. The high Saturday will be around 88 degrees.

Kansas City will likely see the most rain Saturday night into Sunday morning, the NWS forecast predicts, bringing relief to drought conditions in the area.

It has been a dry September — one of the driest on record — with Kansas City seeing only a trace of rain through the first 17 days of the month.

Localized flooding is possible with these storms, which could produce up to 3 inches of rain in some areas, the weather service said. But because of recent drought conditions, the flood threat remains minimal.

Fall weather arrives after weekend rain

Cooler fall weather will arrive Sunday and into next week, when temperatures will settle in the 60s and 70s.

Showers and a thunderstorm are possible Sunday, with a high around 70 degrees. The temperature is expected to fall to around 63 degrees by 5 p.m., the NWS forecast says.

Monday, there is a slight chance of showers on a mostly cloudy day and a high near 64 degrees. Tuesday's high is expected to be around 71 degrees. Temperatures will remain in the low 70s and 60s throughout the week.
