The 15-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting. According to SLCPD, the investigation started around 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. Police interviewed the patient who was shot at the hospital and started searching the parking lot of West High School for evidence.
Based on SLCPD's preliminary investigation, a group of teens gathered in a parking at West High, many appeared to know one another and were reportedly involved in a conflict. At some point, a gun was fired and struck the 15-year-old. After that, everyone fled the parking lot.
SLCPD says that detectives are working with the high school's administration and SLCPD SROs to identify the people in the parking lot before, during, and after the shooting.
Police are seeking tips on the matter.
"Detectives are asking that anyone with information on this case call 801-799-3000 and ask to speak with a police officer. Detectives believe there may be people who have video or photos that could assist with this investigation," SLCPD said.
With the shooting occurring on the property of West High, LCPD will have additional patrols at the school on Friday. Police say there is "no evidence to suggest any greater threat to the West High School community."
