LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — Officials with Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes have announced that school closures in their territories will be extended through Monday, Sept. 16.

According to a release from Lafourche Parish leaders, the extended closure is to ensure that all campuses are safe and clean, and that sufficient time is given to prepare cafeterias for food deliveries.

Entergy Louisiana, Cleco update estimated power restoration timeline

Estimated restoration times reportedly still show that some families will be without power through Sunday and possible into Monday, and so officials are hopeful that by pushing school openings to Tuesday, Sept. 17, they will be sufficiently ready to welcome students back.

All Lafourche Parish School District offices will, however, reportedly be open on Monday, ahead of students' return to class. Updates can be found on the Lafourche Parish School District Facebook page or on their website .

According to another release from Terrebonne Parish leaders, the extended closure comes because more time is needed to assess HVAC systems and to prepare buildings for use. The decision was also influenced by continued power outages throughout the region.
