Some voters in Lincoln were put in wrong precincts, election commissioner says

Lancaster County's election commissioner said Monday that his office has corrected errors that placed more than 200 registered voters in the wrong precincts.

Todd Wiltgen said in a news release that the street file used by his office to assign voters to precincts contained errors that occurred either when the file was manually updated after redistricting in 2021 or when properties were annexed into the Lincoln city limits.

Wiltgen highlighted two cases in which the errors caused some voters to either vote in the wrong race or prevented them from voting in a race they were supposed to vote in:

* Fifty-five households in the area of First and Benton streets were left in the wrong voting precinct, 1E3, after the 2021 redistricting. The error affected 111 registered voters and prevented 10 of them from voting in this year's primary election for candidates in Legislative District 27.

* Seventeen residences near Old Cheney Road and Nebraska Parkway were inadvertently left in the 10E15 precinct rather than moving to precinct 10E14 after redistricting. The error affected 41 registered voters and allowed 16 voters to cast ballots in the Board of Regents District 5 race rather than the District 1 race for State Board of Education.

In the six other instances, which affected about 55 voters, there were no ballot errors, Wiltgen said.

He said notices of the precinct changes have been mailed to all affected voters along with new voter registration cards that correctly identify their new polling places for the Nov. 5 election. Those who have requested an early ballot by mail will receive the correct ballot.

Wiltgen said voters can confirm their polling place location on the Nebraska Voter Information Lookup website , and anyone with questions can call the Election Office at 402-441-7311.
