Southeast Tech to add onsite location at SD State Penitentiary

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - An expanded education initiative will be coming to the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. The South Dakota Board of Technical Education has given the initial green light to Southeast Technical College to open an onsite location at the facility. According to the school's proposal, the move would build onto an existing program geared towards inmates. Since August of 2022, enrollment in the Welding Certificate Program has increased from 15 to 57, with 49 graduates. The proposal signals other programs could be added at the prison location. Accreditation is expected by next summer, with classes starting in the fall of 2025.
