St. Louis County declares emergency due to rising floodwaters

CLAYTON, Mo. — St. Louis County Executive Dr. Sam Page declared a state of emergency Thursday as rising floodwaters claimed lives and forced road closures across the region. The executive order is a formal request for state and federal resources.

The Meramec River is expected to flood again as it crests this weekend. The river, still swelling from Tuesday's storms, is forecast to crest at 32.5 feet in Valley Park by Friday night. As of Thursday, water levels had already reached 23 feet, forcing officials to close the Valley Park Floodgate near Highway 141 at Vance Road.

Flood threat prompts evacuations in Pacific

Communities downstream, including Pacific, Valley Park, and Eureka, face severe flooding risks. In Pacific, rising waters threaten to cut off southern access to the city if Highways F and O become submerged. Gravois Road south of New Bridge in Fenton is also at risk.

The emergency declaration comes after several water rescues on Wednesday. Officials warn that nighttime conditions are particularly hazardous.

Despite forecasts for dry weather through the weekend, officials warn that water levels will continue to rise as runoff moves downstream. County authorities are urging residents to avoid flooded roads and prepare for extended detours and delays.
