State college football roundup: Ferrum beats Averett
FERRUM — Jahylen Lee ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Ferrum football team to a 35-6 win over Averett on Saturday.
Aiden Vaught also ran for a TD for Ferrum (5-5, 3-4 ODAC).
Davon Simpkins scored on a 21-yard fumble return for the Panthers, while Peja Brent scored on a 74-ayrd fumble return.
Averett (3-7, 1-6) trailed 35-0 entering the fourth.
Western Carolina 58, VMI 28
Taron Dickens threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Catamounts (6-5, 5-2) past the Keydets (1-10, 1-6).
Western Carolina's Ken Moore Jr. scored on a 34-yard interception return.
VMI's Chandler Wilson threw a TD pass but was picked off three times. Backup QB JoJo Crump threw for 138 yards and one TD for VMI. Hunter Rice ran for 109 yards and two TDs.
Western Carolina led 41-7 at halftime.
Shenandoah 28, W&L 21
Steven Hugney ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the visiting Hornets (8-2, 4-2 ODAC) past the Generals (6-4, 5-2).
Ty Collins threw for a touchdown and ran for another for W&L. Anthony Crawford also had a TD run.
Hugney threw a 3-yard TD pass to extend the Shenandoah lead to 28-7 with 13 minutes to go.
LaGrange 50, SVU 24
Henry Brodnax threw for 390 yards and four TDs to lead host LaGrange (6-4, 6-2) past the Knights (1-9, 1-7).
Devin Watson threw for 367 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions and also ran for a TD for SVU. Gage Watson kicked a field goal.
JMU 35, ODU 32
Alonza Barnett III ran for two TDs and threw for another to help the visiting Dukes (8-2, 4-2 Sun Belt) fend off the Monarchs (4-6, 3-3).
Liberty 35, UMass 34, OT
Quinton Cooley rushed for 147 yards and scored his third touchdown in overtime, Colin Karhu made a game-winning point-after attempt and Liberty (7-2) edged host Massachusetts (2-8).
UMass kicker Jacob Lurie missed a 43-yard field-goal attempt at the end of regulation.
Jalen John opened overtime with a 23-yard run and scored on the next play to give UMass the lead. But Lurie's point-after attempt hit the upright.
It was then Liberty's turn in OT. Kaidon Salter picked up 8 yards on a first-down run. Cooley followed with a 12-yard run before powering it in from the 5. Karhu made the PAT and was hoisted in the air by his teammate in celebration.
Salter threw for 114 yards and ran for two touchdowns.
No. 7 Richmond 24, Hampton 21
Zach Palmer-Smith rushed for 166 yards with two touchdowns and visiting Richmond (9-2, 7-0) held on to defeat Hampton (5-6, 2-5) for its ninth straight win.
Richmond clinched at least a share of the CAA title.
William & Mary 22, Bryant 12
Carson Jenkins returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown to help host William & Mary (7-4, 4-3 CAA) defeat Bryant (2-9, 0-7).
Norfolk State 38, Delaware State 19
Jalen Daniels passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and host Norfolk State (4-7, 2-2 MEAC) beat Delaware State (1-10, 0-4).
