Staying quiet tonight and most of Sunday

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – After a spectacular start to the weekend on Saturday, our weather stays dry for most of Sunday. Find out when our next rain chance arrives below...

Quiet tonight

Mainly clear skies will be accompanied by a seasonable chill overnight.

Expect lows to dip into the low to mid 40s for most, but some of our normally cooler outlying areas look to end up in the mid to upper 30s. There may even be a bit of patchy frost in the coldest spots.

Conditions are looking good if you want to try and see the Northern Lights tonight !

Dry for most of Sunday

Sunday will feature plenty of sunshine during the morning and midday. As the area of high pressure that brought us the beautiful day on Saturday moves off the coast, sun gives way to increasing clouds during the afternoon.

Highs will be warmer than Saturday, returning to the low to mid 70s.

Shower/storm threat Sunday evening

After about 5 p.m., the chance for showers and even thunderstorms will increase, initially over the Finger Lakes, before rain moves in closer to Syracuse by 7 or 8 p.m. Sunday evening.

West of Syracuse, where the storms arrive earliest, there is even a threat for severe weather. One or two of the storms may produce heavy rainfall and gusty, damaging winds. We will watch this closely for you.

Showers and storms weaken and taper off quickly to the east by midnight.

Finally feeling like fall

Over the last few weeks, our bouts of fall-like weather have been brief in nature.

Early next week there will be an extended period of cool and unsettled weather.

Sunday night's showers and storms are ahead of a cold front that moves through Central New York and ushers in the coolest weather we have seen so far this season.

Temperatures during this time are expected to be in the 50s to near 60 which is a bit below average for this point in October.

The cool air moving over a very warm Lake Ontario along with some disturbances in the jet stream winds aloft dropping out of Canada keep the threat of showers in the forecast through midweek.
