TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Stellantis said Wednesday about 1,100 workers will be laid off as it moves to a one-shift operating pattern.

The layoffs are expected to go into effect as early as Jan. 5, 2025. A message from the UAW leadership to members said it affected the Gladiator JT side.

A statement from a Stellantis spokesperson Wednesday said the move from a two-shift to a one-shift operating pattern is in an effort to reduce high inventory levels by managing production to meet sales.

"These are difficult actions to take, but they are necessary to enable the Company to regain its competitive edge and eventually return production to prior levels," the company statement read.

It went on to say affected employees will receive a year of supplemental unemployment benefits in combination with eligible state unemployment benefits to equal 74% of their pay, along with one year of transition assistance and healthcare coverage that will continue for two years.

The UAW message to workers said they should expect a call from the company about the WARN notice Wednesday.

"Included in this number is the company's plans for job eliminations, over manpower for tag relief and numbers to scale back JT to one shift. For the JT side based on order numbers it is still the company's plan to rotate working day and afternoon shift until January 5. As for the Wrangled JL side, the company will not be notified from corporate until Friday about the plans for next week. The complex manager did say the plan is to run both shifts starting next week from here on out." - UAW leadership statement to workers
