AUBURN - Stephen J. "Moose" Kmyta, 71, of Auburn, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, at Rochester Regional General Hospital after a brief illness. Moose was a lifetime resident and "Legend" of Auburn. He was the son of Stephen P. and Mary Kmyta.

Moose was a member of the first graduating class of Auburn High School in 1971. Stephen worked at Auburn Enlarged City School District, but most of his career as a Corrections Officer, retiring from Auburn Correctional Facility.

In his younger years, Moose enjoyed recreation softball (Neisners), bowling and won numerous competitive eating contests for charity.

Moose served honorably in the U.S. Army National Guard and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Utopia Club and served as an Honor Guard and Sergent at Arms at the S.K. Post 1324.

Moose was predeceased by his parents; several aunts and uncles; and cousins.

Surviving are his sisters, Linda (Bill) Gentilcore and Karen May; nephew, Nicholas Gentilcore; and nieces, Stephanie and Erika May; as well as several cousins.

Friends are invited to call on the family Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a funeral service to follow, in the Heieck-Pelc Funeral Home, LLC, 48 South St., Auburn.

Family has requested in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to LifeNet, Honor Flight or local charities of ones' choice in memory of Moose.
