Strong weather system to move into Kansas City. Here’s when widespread rains expected
If you plan to go outdoors late Friday night, you better go ahead and bring an umbrella. The National Weather Service said a storm system is moving toward Kansas City , bringing widespread rains.
But before the storms move in, the skies will be mostly cloudy, and temperatures will be in the mid-50s. Kansas City's average temperature this time of year is typically around 57 degrees.
Winds will be light, about five to 10 mph in the morning, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Rain showers coming
A robust weather system over New Mexico that is bringing heavy rains to the Southern Plains is expected to move towards the Kansas City area on Friday. The weather service said more clouds and increased humidity will push into the area as the storm system nears the Kansas City region.
"If you're heading out Friday evening, bring an umbrella or poncho," the weather service said on social media.
Widespread rain showers are expected to start in the area Friday night and continue into Saturday morning. The weather service said some areas might hear thunder, but no severe weather is expected.
Those with early plans early in the night will likely remain dry as temperatures linger in the low 50s and winds gusting 10 to 20 mph. The weather service said rain chances go from 15% at 6 p.m. to 20% at 9 p.m. and 65% at midnight. Rain chances continue to increase overnight.
The rain should end by late Saturday afternoon. Rainfall totals are expected to range between .25 and .75 inches. Bates County in Missouri and Linn County in Kansas will likely see higher rainfall totals, while northeast Missouri will see lower amounts.
The rain should come to an end by late Saturday afternoon.
Drier days ahead
Skies are expected to be clear on Sunday, allowing the metro to dry out from the storms earlier in the weekend, the weather service said.
Breezy winds are expected as temperatures will climb into the upper 50s to mid-60s in the afternoon.
"Generally, tranquil weather conditions should persist through Tuesday, with daytime highs in the upper 50s to mid-60s," the weather service said in its forecast discussion .
Another weather system could move into the area on Wednesday. There's a 20% to 40% chance of rain in the morning and afternoon.
