MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)– Spanky's Pub House owner Bob Ross is used to telling his staff to ready their grills, but it was a different appliance that was on his mind Saturday morning.

"Fire up those razors," he said with a laugh — kicking off the first St. Baldrick's event to hit the Grand in 15 years.

Ready to show solidarity for a good cause, 18 brave people volunteered to have their heads shaved in support of childhood cancer research.

"Cancer affects all of us, so I'm here to help build this event," said Jill Levine. "And really, it's a team of six putting it on and a lot of volunteers and in a very small amount of time so I can't wait to see what we do next year."

What started as a $5,000 fundraising goal, quickly became $25,000 and organizers anticipate surpassing that amount.

Spanky's Pub House also donated 10% of all Saturday's sales. Ross took his participation seriously, signing up to get his own head shaved.

"Not only are we hosting it, but when it came to it, I said, 'I would be glad to participate if you want, but I'm not sure its going to grow back,'" Ross said. "And it couldn't be a better event to do it at. Itt's a great feeling that you might be contributing to such a good cause for these young kids who have such a horrible situation going on."

Throughout the event, there was a silent auction bringing in more funds. All the money raised goes back to pediatric cancer research.
