Suspect fatally shot by police during early morning foot chase identified
SAN ANTONIO - The suspect who was shot and killed by San Antonio Police officers during a foot chase early Monday morning has been identified.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office identified the suspect as 45-year-old Steve Allen Lopez.
The officer-involved shooting happened around 1 a.m. Monday off West Commerce Street and Southwest 29th Street.
We're learning this started when officers were researching a car they believed may have been linked to a felony investigation. As they tried to pull over the driver and Lopez, who was the passenger, bailed out of the vehicle and took off running.
Officials say the officers chased Lopez on foot. Lopez then pointed a firearm at the officers, who then opened fire.
Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other suspect who was driving the car abandoned it.
Both officers have been with the department for approximately five years each. They will be placed on administrative duty pending the results of the investigation.
