Syracuse marina catches fire

Nov. 7—SYRACUSE — A fire at Main Channel Marina in Syracuse has left one of its locations inoperable.

Mickey Scott, chief of the Turkey Creek Township Fire Department, said that the fire occurred around 2:54 a.m., when the building, at 720 S. Lakeside Drive, was reportedly unoccupied.

"When we first arrived on scene the fire was in the office, what they were calling the breakroom area which is on the backside of the building," Scott explained.

Scott said the gates were locked and secured, and the fire personnel had to cut them to make entry. The fire destroyed the showroom, the breakroom and the offices. The fire department had to contact the water department to have pumps turned on, and estimates are that 400,000 to 500,000 gallons of water were used to get the fire out, which took about an hour and a half.

Five area fire departments were called in to assist — Turkey Creek, Tippecanoe, Milford, Benton, and Warsaw-Wayne, amounting to around 45 firefighters on the scene.

"There's some boats in there, how much damage to those boats and jet skis we have no idea because it had a metal roof that fell on it," Scott said.

They remained on scene until afternoon checking for hot spots.
