Target‘s next move might be membership in 2025: Here’s why

Could a huge change be heading to Target stores next year? That seems to be a possibility.

When it comes to buying in bulk, saving money and indulging in the shopping experience, retailers such as Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's are the place to be. Amazon is another contender with its Prime membership deals.

According to a report from Bloomberg , in an effort to compete, Target will be joining other retailers and will roll out a paid membership program. The program, called "Project Trident," could make its way to shoppers by the end of 2024.

No additional details have been provided about pricing, tiers, or what the membership would include, but if its anything like Amazon Prime, Walmart Plus, or Kroger Boost, exclusive deals, discounts, and perks, such as free deliveries for groceries could be expected.

Bloomberg also mentioned that the new paid membership program could include the integration of Shipt, a grocery delivery service company that Target acquired in 2017. Target currently offers same-day delivery with Shipt in all of its almost 2,000 stores .

Target already offers a free loyalty program for shoppers called Target Circle , which gives customers 1% back on purchases and is available to spend at the store. The retailer also offers Target Circle Card and Target 360 to save money.

But it is worth noting that rumors of the retailer going membership-only aren't true; customers will still be able to shop at Target without signing up for a membership plan.
