Burleson passes liquor proposition

Burleson will soon be the largest city in Johnson County to have liquor stores.

Joining Rio Vista and Alvarado, voters approved a proposition for the legal sale of alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption. The measure saw 13,889 votes for and 6,752 against.

According to an economic study from the Perryman Group, it is estimated the city will generate about $250,000 in sales tax revenue annually. It is predicted that 114 new jobs will be added as well.

City council overturns in Keene

In Keene, there was major upheaval as three incumbent council members were unseated by three newcomers who had not served on the council before.

"Congrats to all for running a good campaign and for your service," Keene Mayor Lisa Parrish said.

Parrish secured her reelection with 608 votes over challenger Rob Foster's 595.

Troy Smith won the Place I council member seat with 322 votes. Challengers received the following: Kaleb Boal, 300; Nellie Youngberg, 292; and Ray Johnson, 187.

"Thank you for entrusting me to serve on council," Smith said. "I plan to work for all citizens of Keene. I am grateful for the opportunity."

For Place II council member, Bob Chapman received 583 votes over James Belz' 509.

Johnny Shaw won the Ward II council member seat with 539 votes over Gwen Beeson's 503.

"I would like to thank everyone who voted and supported me through this race," Shaw said. "I promise to do my best for everyone. I would like to thank Mrs. Beeson for a good race. It's not about the individual — it's about the city. Again thank you for your support."

All but two propositions for amendments to the Keene City Charter passed.

* Prop B: 771 yes, 339 no

* Prop C: 781 yes, 356 no

* Prop D: 667 yes, 434 no

* Prop E: 827 yes, 300 no

* Prop F: 771 yes, 341 no

* Prop G: 745 yes, 362 no

* Prop H: 495 yes, 602 no

* Prop I: 478 yes, 638 no

* Prop J: 673 yes, 364 no

Alvarado ISD bond fails

Voters did not approve Alvarado ISD's Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election for a proposed 11.77-cent increase to the Maintenance and Operations tax rate.

If approved, the increase would have generated $3.7 million in new revenue for increasing teacher pay, safety and security and deferred maintenance.

There were 4,369 votes against and 3,022 for.
