Teen dies after being hit by car in San Marcos Halloween morning
SAN MARCOS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Marcos community is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old who did not survive after being hit by a car last Thursday morning, not too far from San Marcos High School where she was a student.
The San Diego Sheriff's Department says the incident happened Halloween morning around 6:30 a.m.
A car was reportedly heading north on Rancho Santa Fe Road approaching San Marcos Boulevard when the teen crossed the roadway and was struck. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver stayed on scene and cooperated. The investigation is ongoing, but drugs or alcohol are not believed to have played a role.
The Hernandez family shared a GoFundMe Monday, saying Yoltzin was left brain dead and they were left in the "unimaginable position of making the heart-wrenching decision to let her go."
They also shared Yoltzin was an incredible person who was always there for the people she loved.
The support from the community was evident as messages and donations poured in. Within just a few hours, the fundraiser well-surpassed its goal.
Some local residents have raised concerns about the busy intersection. City leaders are listening.
San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones shared this statement:
"The entire community is grieving the passing of this student, a 16-year-old, whose bright future was cut short in the recent tragic incident near San Marcos high School. On behalf of the city Council, city officials and our residents, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and school community.
We understand the community's concern for roadway safety. We are still evaluating all aspects of this incident, but we can share that preliminary information indicates this accident did not happen in the intersection, rather it took place mid-block of Rancho Santa Fe between San Marcos Boulevard and Lake San Marcos Drive. The traffic data shows that there have been no other pedestrian accidents in this location in more than a decade."
San Marcos High School is providing counseling for students who need it. The Sheriff's Department is still asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or captured it on dash cam to call the San Marcos Sheriff's Station.
