Teresa Weatherspoon among 6 Unrivaled coaches for debut season
Basketball Hall of Fame member Teresa Weatherspoon is one of six coaches who will lead teams this winter in Unrivaled, the upcoming 3x3 women's basketball league.
Fired in September after one season with the Chicago Sky, Weatherspoon previously worked as an assistant coach and a player development coach with the New Orleans Pelicans. The two-time Olympic gold medalist also was the head coach of Louisiana Tech.
In choosing Weatherspoon and the others, Unrivaled officials looked for coaches with experience in player development, especially with the NBA or WNBA ranks. Unrivaled, co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, will feature six teams of six players each.
Coaches will be assigned to the clubs on Wednesday, the same day players will be selected for each teams.
The other coaches are:
-Phil Handy, a longtime NBA assistant coach who won titles with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers
-Adam Harrington, a former NBA player who most recently served as an assistant coach and the director of player development for the Brooklyn Nets
-Nola Henry, who joined the Los Angeles Sparks coaching staff prior to the 2023 season after working with the Connecticut Sun and the University of Hartford
-DJ Sackmann, an NBA and WNBA skills coach who has worked with more than 15,000 players worldwide at events such as camps and clinics
-Andrew Wade, who recently departed his role as player development and assistant coach with the Washington Mystics after six seasons
Last month, Unrivaled unveiled the names of its six teams - the Laces, Mist, Rose, Lunar Owls, Phantom and Vinyl.
The eight-week Unrivaled season is scheduled to begin Jan. 17, with games played in the Miami area.
