Texarkana firefighters helping to keep wildfires in check

TEXARKANA, Texas ( KTAL/KSHV ) — The Texarkana, Texas Fire Department is helping to keep the state safe from wildfires.

Parts of east and southeast Texas are facing critical fire weather right now. So Captain Brad Smith, Engineers Zach Flanagan and David Jackson, and Firefighter Jackson Lundry have joined a team of firefighters in Victoria, Texas as part of the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System.

That system is designed to stage firefighters from across the state in areas believed to be at risk for wildfires. They say the Texarkana team has been there about a week and has been busy responding to and extinguishing fires before they are able to spread.

"They come back with all this information that they learned from being out on these other fires, especially some of these large great fires that we may have had here locally. So it's a great learning experience and a great time for them to help others that need it," says TTFD Chief Chris Black.

The team will be deployed for two to three weeks and a new team could be rotated in if they are needed.

TTFD says this does not impact their ability to provide regular services to the community.
