MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Roads, parks and waterways around the region are looking a little bit nicer today. Hundreds of volunteers spread through the coast for the 37th annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup.

Mobile's Tricentennial Park is one of dozens of sites around Mobile and Baldwin Counties where people have gathered to help out.

"I just like that. I feel like I'm making the world a better place and picking up all the trash because, you know, we live with a lot of trash picked up every year with this event, said Mobile Baykeeper Swim Intern Sydney Bodiford. On its face, litter not only looks bad on the side of the road or maybe in a pond, but the other issue is trash can also be a health concern.

"With the environment, you know, with there's trash, there are different rodents that can come. They bring diseases and all kinds of things. So it's important to us to just get out into the community and help wherever we can," said Mobile County Health Department Clinic Clerk Myia Andry.
