The partial lunar eclipse shone bright across a portion of the planet this week.

Unlike a total lunar eclipse, a partial lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and Earth are in an imperfect alignment and there is only a small portion of the moon covered, per NASA . The second lunar eclipse of the year was visible across the Americas, Europe and Africa between the evenings of Sept. 17 and Sept. 18.

This particular partial lunar eclipse — also the Harvest Moon — was extra special since it was also a supermoon , so it shone even brighter and looked larger in the sky.

This partial lunar eclipse will be the last lunar eclipse of 2024, but don't worry if you missed out this year! The next total lunar eclipse will take place March 13 through March 14, 2025. According to timeanddate.com , that eclipse will be visible across Europe, the Americas and much of Asia, Australia and Africa,
