SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The golf season is coming to an end here in the Pioneer Valley. This comes as we head into the winter months where residents will soon see the wet and cold weather conditions that make it difficult for golfers to play, and for workers to maintain the outdoor courses.

Now, golf seasons vary depending on the location and the weather but here in Massachusetts the golf season usually begins in April and ends around Thanksgiving.

Veterans Golf Course in Springfield officially closed for the season on Sunday while Franconia Golf Course will remain open until Sunday, December 1.

Bill Crawford from Somers told 22News that he plays golf every Sunday and while other local courses begin to close, he still has a few more weekends left to play at the Franconia Golf Course.

"If you look at it, the weather has been warm and we are lucky to get this far ,and we are really happy, the group of guys I play with. We are all happy," said Crawford.

Veterans Golf Course is closing earlier to accommodate clubhouse renovations, which is part of a $5 million investment in both municipal courses. These upgrades will enhance the facilities and the playing experience for guests, giving golfers something to look forward to when the golf season returns.

Even though the golf season is coming to an end, golfers can still go to indoor golf facilities and simulators in the area.

"I am grateful that we got to play this long into the year and luckily technology has come a long way here, so we can still play on the simulators through the winter and try to keep that swing warm until we get to the season here in the Spring," said Dominick Pellegrino, a golfer from East Longmeadow. "I am glad to be here, and we will see the next year coming in before we know it."
