These major metro Phoenix freeways will be closed this weekend. Here's how to avoid traffic

If you plan on traveling in or out of Phoenix this weekend, prepare for trouble.

Five major Phoenix-area highways will be closed or narrowed for construction between Friday night and into Monday morning, including Interstates 10 and 17.

The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends allowing more time and taking alternate roads to get around Phoenix, Tempe and Chandler. For the latest traffic conditions and delays, drivers can go to az511.gov , check the az511 app or call 511.

Here are the metro Phoenix roads and freeways that will be closed or narrowed for construction from Friday, Sept. 20, through Monday, Sept. 23.

Westbound I-10 closed between Loop 202 and U.S. 60; Cardinals fans recommended to take alternate route

Details: Westbound I-10 will be closed between Loop 202 and U.S. 60 for paving and a traffic shift. The on-ramp for I-10 West at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard will be closed. Additional ramp closures include westbound U.S. 60 off-ramp at Priest Drive and westbound on-ramp at Mill Avenue closed.

Westbound U.S. 60 will be narrowed to one lane between Mill Avenue and I-10. Eastbound U.S. 60 will be narrowed to three lanes between Country Club and Mesa drives from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

When:

Alternate routes: ADOT recommends drivers going westbound on I-10 to detour on eastbound Loop 202 to northbound Loop 101 and westbound Loop 202. Cardinals fans can also consider using westbound/northbound Loop 202 to reach I-10 near 59th Avenue.

Northbound I-17 narrowed to 1 lane between Loop 303 and State Route 74

Details: Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between Loop 303 and SR 74 for pavement improvements. Northbound I-17 off- and on-ramps at Dove Valley Road will be closed. In addition, the northbound I-17 circular ramp to westbound SR 74 was scheduled to be closed at night.

When:

Alternate routes: ADOT urged drivers to allow extra travel time and consider traveling when traffic is lighter, typically early morning or nighttime.

Traffic: This is the busiest stretch of freeway in metro Phoenix

Northbound SR 51 closed between I-10/Loop 202 'Mini-Stack' interchange and Loop 101

Details: Northbound SR 51 will be closed between the I-10/Loop 202 "Mini-Stack" interchange and Loop 101 for pavement sealing. Crews will work to reopen the northbound freeway in sections as work progresses on Saturday.

When:

Alternate routes: There is an alternate route using northbound I-17 to eastbound Loop 101 in north Phoenix.

Westbound Loop 202 closed between Arizona Avenue and Loop 101

Details: Westbound Loop 202 will be closed between Arizona Avenue and Loop 101 due to a widening project. Westbound Loop 202 on-ramp closures include Gilbert, Cooper and McQueen roads. The southbound Loop 101 HOV ramp to eastbound Loop 202 will be closed.

When:

Alternative routes: Drivers should exit ahead of the closure and use alternate routes, including westbound Germann Road or Pecos Road.

Southbound SR 143 closed between Loop 202 and I-10

Details: Southbound state Route 143 will be closed between Loop 202 and I-10 for a traffic shift. The westbound Loop 202 off-ramp to Sky Harbor Boulevard, an airport exit, will be closed.

When:

Alternative route: The ADOT suggests that drivers headed to the airport and other destinations along the route use westbound Loop 202 to eastbound I-10.
