A 37-yard field goal with 4.7 seconds left on the clock earned Lewiston a dramatic victory over Bangor on Friday night , 10-7 at Cameron Stadium.

Around the state of Maine, the third week of football season was filled with games that came down to the wire. Here are four that were decided by less than a field goal.

Hermon beats Hampden Academy 22-21 away

For the second week in a row, the Hermon (2-1) football team went for the win on a 2-point conversion. Messalonskee thwarted the Hawks 35-34 in overtime last Friday, but this time Hermon's gutsy play-calling paid off, as sophomore Sam Hopkins ran it in for the last-minute victory over Hampden (2-1).

"[The kids] made the call. They wanted it," Hermon head coach Kyle Gallant said. "I have all the confidence in the world in them to make the right call. Super proud of all of them."

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Hermon was stopped on goal-to-go at the one-yard line, but forced Hampden to punt and regained possession. Sophomore quarterback Ethan Curtis marshaled Hermon down the field again, culminating in a beautiful 27-yard touchdown pass to freshman Griffin Dunton. Dunton then picked Hampden off to seal the victory.

Greely beats Stearns/Schenck 42-40 away

Trailing Stearns 32-14 on the road, Greely (2-1) shocked the Minutemen (2-1) with four fourth quarter touchdowns to win an 8-man football thriller.

The fleet-footed Rangers of Cumberland Center began their comeback with a 90-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Luke Piper to senior Wes Piper. After a Stearns touchdown, the Pipers linked up on a go route for an 86-yard score, and then junior Ben Kyles cut it to 40-36 on a 70-yard punt return TD.

From there, Greely parlayed two more Piper-to-Piper passes to complete the comeback, and then picked Stearns off at the 4-yard line to close out the drama.

Edward Little beats Messalonskee 36-34 at home

Edward Little got its first win in more than two years after a back-and-forth battle versus Messalonskee (1-2) at home. Trailing with three minutes to go and for the first time all night, the Red Eddies (1-2) marched down the field and scored on a senior TJ Kramarz keeper for the emotional victory.

Friday was full of firsts for Edward Little, which also won its first ever game on its new turf field. Kramarz, a first-year football player, finished with three TDs and 145 yards rushing, and junior Quan Bullock scored his first two varsity touchdowns to go with 93 yards rushing.

Mattanawcook/Lee Academy beats Old Town 35-33 at home

Led by sophomore running backs Austen Jipson and Kooper McCarthy, Mattanawcook Academy fought back from a 21-7 first quarter deficit to beat Old Town in Lincoln. The Lynx are competing as an 11-man football team for the first time since 2019, and improved to 2-1 with the win.

Mattanawcook had a chance to ice the game late in the fourth quarter, but fumbled the ball on the Old Town 10-yard line. Down 35-27, the Coyotes (1-2) proceeded to convert on 4th-and-10 from their own 36-yard line, then ran in a 5-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Ethan Closson. The Lynx managed to stuff Closson on the 2-point conversion to prevent overtime and seal their second straight D North win.
