Thick smoke could impact driving conditions from Fort Chaffee fire

SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Ark. ( KNWA/KFTA ) — UPDATE 6:15 a.m.: The Greenwood Police Department announced before midnight stating residents should be cautious while driving as heavy smoke and fire equipment could be in the area.

"This pre-staging of equipment and personnel is solely for preparation purposes," the post states. "Currently, the winds have died down, and containment efforts are being managed."

Severe drought continues to impact the River Valley.

Burn bans are in place until further notice.

The cause of the fire has not been released.

SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Ark. ( KNWA/KFTA ) — UPDATE 7:04 p.m.: The Sebastian County Emergency Management Director Travis Cooper says the east line of the fire is clear.

The west line of the fire is still moving south of Marietta Church Road. There are several roads being used as perimeters for the fire as it moves southwest.

Cooper says there is no immediate danger to any residents or communities.

There will be heavy smoke in the area as the wind blows towards Huntington, Abbott and Mansfield areas.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Franklin County Emergency Management says officials are aware of a wildfire burning inside Fort Chaffee south of Charleston.

Fort Chaffee officials have crews fighting the fire and are advising it is moving to the southwest further onto the base, according to a social media post .

Departments across portions of the River Valley have been dealing with fires as the area has faced burn bans and drought conditions.

The cause and origin of the fire has not been released.
