This week's Star-Tribune college football AP vote
RENO, Nevada – Another crazy night in the Mountain West.
That’s what Craig Bohl said when I saw him on the sideline during Wyoming’s pregame warmups on Saturday night at Mackay Stadium.
The longtime head coach was referring to San Jose State’s victory at UNLV, which forced a three-way tie atop the conference standings between the Spartans (7-5, 6-2), Rebels (9-3, 6-2) and Boise State Broncos (7-5, 6-2).
In the wee hours, Hawaii pulled off a dramatic win over Colorado State to prevent UW’s Border War rivals from playing in a bowl game.
Fortunately for Bohl, there wasn’t any drama for the Cowboys (8-4, 5-3) during a 42-6 pummeling of Nevada a week after their 42-9 romp over Hawaii.
However, quarterback Andrew Peasley said the team’s previous road losses – particularly the one at Air Force – still bothered him.
Instead of playing in the MW championship game, UW will wait for a bowl destination.
It was a crazy Sunday morning in the MW as the computer rankings spit SJSU out of the title game. UNLV will host Boise State next Saturday at Allegiant Stadium.
The parity has made it impossible to keep any MW teams on my ballot, but I did save room for plenty of Group of Five love.
Here’s how I voted in this week’s Associated Press poll (previous ranking):
The Wolverines (12-0) finished 6-0 in games Jim Harbaugh was suspended for this season with a classic 30-24 win over hated rival Ohio State. Mr. Khaki pants will return to the sideline when Michigan plays Iowa in the Big Ten championship.
The Dawgs (12-0) finished the regular season with a 31-23 win over non-conference rival Georgia Tech. The two-time reigning national champions will face Alabama in the SEC championship.
The Apple Cup came down to a 42-yard field goal by walk-on Grady Gross, who was awarded a scholarship in the postgame locker room after delivering a 24-21 win for the Huskies (12-0) over rival Washington State. Washington still has to beat Oregon for a second time in the final Pac-12 championship to make the College Football Playoff.
Trey Benson ran for three touchdowns to make sure the Seminoles (12-0) remained perfect with a 24-14 win at Florida a week after start quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a gruesome season-ending leg injury.
