Dear W.C.,

I married my high school sweetheart when I was only twenty-one and he is the love of my life. He has cared for me, and we have been blessed with our nine-year-old daughter, even though the doctors said I should not have children. When I was a child, I was in a car accident while my father was driving drunk, and my injuries caused me to spend a month in the hospital and it left me with several disabilities. Thirty years later, at times I still struggle with intense back pain and limited use of one of my hands. This has made it very difficult for me to work over the years. Several months ago, my husband was diagnosed with cancer and this has been very difficult. He went through surgery and has been too sick to return to work while undergoing further treatment. Our car payment is late and so is our rent. I wish there was more I could do to help our financial situation but between my own health issues and now caring for my husband while he is so sick, it would be impossible for me to get a job. My husband has used up all his paid time off and he has tried to return several times only to come home halfway through the day due to intense fatigue and nausea. If you could just help us through the next two months while he completes his treatments, we would be forever grateful to The Time is Now to Help. I am afraid if we do not receive any help, we may lose our home and our transportation.

Dear Readers,

I called this family to schedule a visit. When I arrived at the address the wife had provided, she opened the door before I could knock. We made our introductions, and the woman reached out with her left hand to grasp my hand in a shake. She explained she was not able to use her right hand due to nerve damage from the accident she had been in as a child.

The woman introduced me to her husband who struggled to get out of his chair. I immediately told him it was not necessary to get up and he looked relieved. We all sat to talk.

I learned more details about the wife's childhood accident and her difficult upbringing due to her father's drinking. I could see the love between the husband and wife as she told me how he had saved her from their dysfunctional home and showed her what family life should be. She had tears in her eyes when she looked at her husband with such appreciation and love it brought tears to my own eyes.

Now that the husband was struggling to regain his health the wife had taken over most household duties, with help from their daughter. I could see with the limited use of her right hand and the pain that would blindside her several days a week, her most important job to do right now was to help care for her weak and ill husband.

We went over the expenses that were beginning to accumulate. They had a good relationship with their elderly landlord who counted on their rent to get by and felt terrible about being late with their rent. Their only vehicle was on the verge of being repossessed. The stress of all this was weighing heavily on both the husband and the wife.

We together would pay their rent for three months and pay three car payments. We also would provide gift cards for gas, food and other daily necessities. When I shared our plan of assistance with the husband and wife, they both were overwhelmed with emotion. They could not believe that we would be able to provide the amount of assistance they needed to prevent poverty from getting its grasp on their lives and provide them with the peace of mind to rest and heal until the husband is healthy enough to return to work.
