DALLAS — The Back Mountain Historical Association will discuss the Lands at Hillside and address the historic Himmler Theater during its fall meeting at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25 in Walsh Auditorium at College Misericordia.
Joseph Moskovitz, Dallas Borough manager, will discuss the Himmler Theater, which opened in 1920. Andrew Check, executive director of the Lands at Hillside, and Will Conyngham will discuss the historic farm and its future.
Following the presentation, refreshments and snacks will be available at the MacDonald Art Gallery. The meeting is free and open to the public.

DALLAS — The Wyoming Valley Civil War Round Table will present Sheldon A. Munn with his program on “Freemasons at Gettysburg” at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the lower level of the Daddow-Isaacs American Legion Post, Route 415. The program is open to the public for a $3 fee or a membership fee is $15.
EXETER — St. Cecilia’s Church will celebrate its annual Fatima Day Celebration on Saturday. A healing Mass and anointing of the sick will be celebrated by the Rev. Daniel D. Hitchko and the Rev. Gregory Finn at 11:15 a.m. St. Cecilia’s Choir, under the direction of Ann Manganiello, music minister, will render hymns during the liturgy.
The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served at a hospitality gathering in the parish center following the liturgy hosted by the Altar and Rosary/Christian Mothers Society.
HAZLETON — The FUNFEST Committee has announced the following list of winners for the FUNFEST Parade.

JENKINS TWP. — The members of the Jenkins Township Lions Club seek donations of prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses throughout October.
The donated glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups in developing countries where eye care is sometime unaffordable and inaccessible.
To donate, place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle for Sight collection box located at the Jenkins Township Borough Building in Inkerman. This is a permanent collection sight where glasses are accepted year round.
The Jenkins Lions also recycle previously used hearing aids, both analog and digital. For more information, call 655-1089.
The Jenkins Township Lions Club have also proclaimed October to be White Cane Awareness Month.
As a result, the Jenkins Lions will be collecting for donations at the Pittston Wal-Mart on Oct. 21-22.
Also on the following week, they will be collecting at Sunshine Market on Oct. 27, 28, and 29.
NANTICOKE — There will be a recognition ceremony to honor World War II veterans living in the 119th Legislative District hosted by State Rep. John T. Yudichak, D-Nanticoke, at 3 p.m. on Nov. 9 at American Legion Post 350.
Yudichak seeks assistance in identifying World War II veterans to be honored at the ceremony. WWII veterans or their families can contact Liz Gorski, in Yudichak’s office, at 740-7031 to provide information about any area veterans. Information needed is the veteran’s name, rank, branch of service, time of service and a phone number and home address for the veteran to be honored.
NANTICOKE — St. Padre Pio Prayer Group will meet on Oct. 15 at St. Joseph’s Church, 107 East Noble St. Confessions will be heard from 2:30 until 2:50 p.m. Services will begin at 3 p.m. with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and chaplet of divine mercy.
A reading from sacred scripture by Sister Elizabeth Brody RSM will be followed by a spiritual reflection by the Rev. William J.P. Langan, spiritual director.
The sacrament of the anointing of the sick will be administered to those seriously ill or about to undergo surgery. The public is invited. For more information, call 735-6903 or 735-0331.
NOXEN — Michael Nalbone, a student at Lake Lehman High School, will have a fund-raising dance as his senior project from 7 until 11 p.m. on Friday at the Noxen School House.
The dance will benefit the purchasing of three automated external defibrillators for Noxen churches. Halloween costumes are encouraged, but not mandatory. Entry fees will be $4 for students and $6 for adults.
Food and beverages will also be available for purchase.

PLYMOUTH — Friends of the Plymouth Shawnee Cemetery, Mountain Road, seek volunteers from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, clubs, veterans groups, and individuals, to assist with an organized clean-up of the cemetery from 9 a.m. until noon on Oct. 21.
Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts, socks, sturdy shoes and gloves. Anyone with gas lawn mowers, weed-wackers, pruners and rakes are asked to bring them. Gas and oil will be provided.

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Daisy and Brownie Girl Scout Troops are accepting registrations for the 2006/2007 year. Daisies are opened to any girl between the ages of 5 and 6 and in kindergarten.
Brownies are opened to any girl between the ages of 6 and 8 and in first, second and third grade.

SCRANTON — The Scranton State School for the Deaf will begin fall 2006 Community Sign Language classes during the week of Oct. 23. The beginner class will take place on Monday evenings from 6 until 8:30 p.m. starting on Oct. 23 and ending on Dec. 11.
For those unable to attend evening classes, a beginner class will take place from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. starting on Oct. 23 and ending Dec. 11.
The intermediate and advanced classes will be offered on Monday evenings from 6 until 8:30 p.m. beginning on Oct. 23 and ending on Dec. 11.
Phone registration for all classes will take place from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Friday . To register by phone, call the school at 963-4546. There is a $40 tuition fee per person.
WEST PITTSTON — The First United Methodist Church of West Pittston will hold a pastie sale on Oct. 19. Pasties must be ordered by Oct. 17. No orders will be taken the day of the sale.
Pasties available are meat with or without onions, vegetable with cheese, and sausage and pepper with oregano, garlic and onions. The cost is $3.50 each.
Orders can be taken at the church office at 655-1083 between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or by calling Alaimo at 654-3850.
WEST PITTSTON — Boy Scout Troop 352 will have its annual Columbus Day all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper tomorrow at the First United Methodist Church, corner of Wyoming and Montgomery avenues. Takeouts will be available between 4 and 5 p.m. Seating is from 5 until 7 p.m.
Tickets cost $6; children under 5 are free.
WEST PITTSTON — Pesticide Certification Examinations will be given at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Penn State Cooperative Extension Luzerne County office, 16 Luzerne Ave., Suite 200.
The exam is open to anyone wanting to be certified as private, commercial, or public applicators.
Private applicators are those who are farming and applying pesticides to their crops.
Commercial applicators are those who are applying pesticides to property of other people.
Public applicators are those who are applying pesticides to school or municipalities.
WEST WYOMING — The Holy Name Society, Our Lady of Sorrows Church, West Wyoming, will have a ziti dinner on Oct. 15.
Dinner will be served and takeouts will be available from noon until 5 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children.
Takeout customers are asked to bring their own containers. Tickets can be purchased from members of the Holy Name Society or at the door.
WILKES-BARRE — Rajendra Gajula, M.D., medical director of the Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre and Louise Henry, MSW, LCSW, Northeast Counseling Services will offer a presentation from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the Father Streit Enrichment Center at that facility.
“What is a Troubled Teen” will focus on what defines a troubled teen and when a parent/guardian needs to seek help or outside intervention.
Bipolar disorder, depression and other clinical diagnosis in adolescents will be discussed.

WILKES-BARRE — Wilkes-Barre American Legion Post 132 encourages all Post 132 members to pay their 2007 dues on or before Jan. 1. Dues will increase after Jan. 1 to $20 due to the National Headquarters increase of $4.50.
Post 132 members can consider purchasing “paid-up for life” memberships.
ASHLEY — The Ashley Lions Club will sponsor a barbecued chicken dinner from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 14 at the Ashley Firefighters’ grounds, 160 Ashley St.

WILKES-BARRE — The Osterhout Free Library is offering a free English as a second language training course.
Words and expressions used in common situations will be taught.
This eight week course will be held on the following Thursdays: Oct. 26, and Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30, 7, 14, 21. Classes take place from 10 until 11 a.m. at the Gates Lab of the Osterhout.
