Tis the season to think about nonprofits: Mindi Axner

This time of year is filled with celebration, gratitude and a spirit of giving. While it's often associated with material gifts, it's also an opportunity to embrace the deeper meaning of the season, one that focuses on giving back to the community. As executive director of the National Council of Jewish Women/Cleveland (NCJW/CLE), I know how important community support - including personal resources and time - is for helping those in need. And how giving back can be as much a gift to oneself as to the intended recipient or organization. At our volunteer-led organization, we are driven by the mission to improve the lives of women, children and families in Cleveland. It's why I believe that whether it's your time, talent or passion, there are so many ways to make a difference during this special time of year. I challenge you to think about these three things as we close out 2024.Explore new volunteer opportunities Cleveland has no shortage of volunteer opportunities. At NCJW/CLE, we offer endless options: You can help sort clothing donations, assist with organizing events that bring holiday cheer, adopt a Little Free Library or make your voice heard on important social justice issues. Even committing just a few hours of your time can make a tremendous impact. Volunteering not only benefits others, but can also be a fulfilling and joyful experience for you and your family. And it actually has proven health benefits!Make your donations count The end of the year is not only a busy time for holiday festivities, but also the deadline for making tax-deductible contributions. Consider setting aside a portion of your holiday budget for a cause that's meaningful to you. By donating to a nonprofit, you will support essential services that would otherwise be overlooked, from providing clothing for survivors of sexual assault and children in crisis, to giving care and attention to those in need of a little joy and companionship. And not just financial donations... This is my 17th year as executive director and, without a doubt, I see that the needs in the community especially grow as temperatures drop. This time of year, tangible goods can make an immediate difference for those facing hardship. Consider donating items like warm coats, hats, gloves and blankets to support families and children. Hygiene products, such as toiletries and personal care kits, also bring comfort and dignity to those experiencing challenges. (Psst: Our donation drop-off is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and volunteers graciously accept and sort items, then place them where they're needed most.) During this holiday season, let's embrace the spirit of giving in new and impactful ways.
