Tractor rolls over during Wisconsin field trip, at least 17 injured

LAFAYETTE, Wis. (WJW) – At least 17 people, including children, were injured when a tractor rolled over during a field trip at a Wisconsin apple orchard on Wednesday.

According to a Facebook post from Chippewa County, Wisconsin Sheriff Travis Hakes , several children, parents and chaperones were on a wagon ride at Bushel and a Peck Apple Orchard in Lafayette, Wisconsin when a tractor with a wagon attached lost control and went downhill.

According to the sheriff , as people tried to make the wagon come to a stop, it abruptly rolled over, causing injuries to children and adults.

According to the Facebook post , three people were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, five sustained serious injuries, nine more peple were taken to the hospital by ambulance and at least one person was transported by helicopter.

The sheriff also said some people were taken to the hospital in personal vehicles.

"During incidents like these, it is imperative that we focus on the safety of the victims, as well as reunification efforts between the children and their parents," Hakes said. "I personally went to the scene and assisted in calming the children, as well as reuniting them with their parents."

The Chippeway Sheriff's Office, Lake Hallie Police Department, Chippewa Fire District , Chippewa Falls Fire Department, Cadott EMS and Fire, Boyd EMS, Bloomer Ambulance, Eau Claire Fire and EMS, Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Chippewa County Public Health, and Chippewa County Department of Health and Human Services all assisted with the situation
