Tragic hunting accident claims life of 11-year-old Amish child
An 11-year-old Amish child in Crawford County was killed over the weekend after he was shot in the head while hunting chipmunks.
According to a Pennsylvania State Police report, this incident happened on Nov. 2 around 11:51 a.m. near Atlantic Road in east Fallowfield Township.
Police said members of the Amish community told them three Amish juveniles went out with BB guns and a .22 caliber rifle to shoot chipmunks.
According to those involved, two rounds were fired from the rifle towards a chipmunk. The first shot missed, and a follow-up shot was fired wildly as the chipmunk ran.
After that final shot, one of the juveniles allegedly noticed the 11-year-old collapsed on the ground motionless, and immediately sought help from an adult working in a nearby field.
The 11-year-old was taken to UPMC Children's in Pittsburgh by stat medevac where they later passed away due to their injuries on Sunday.
Pennsylvania State Police have ruled their death an accident.
