GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — A teenager convicted of intentionally setting a barn on fire in Gilbert has learned his punishment for the crime.

On Monday, court officials confirmed that one of the unnamed teens involved was released to his parents and ordered to one year of probation.

The teen was sentenced to 120 days of deferred detention and 20 weeks of deferred ankle monitoring.

Should the teen fail their probation or community service requirements, he or she will be ordered to complete that sentence.

Officials are not releasing the teen's name because he was sentenced in juvenile court.

The teen was also ordered to do 40 hours of community service on fire or burn-related causes and must complete two education packets.

The barn fire happened on July 3 near Higley and Guadalupe roads . Police later arrested two teens in connection to that fire .

Jeni Jones, the owner, said her teen daughter was hanging out with friends in the loft inside the barn when a separate group of teen boys showed up uninvited.

She said the boys threw a firework inside the barn-style garage. Surveillance video inside the barn shows a flash and the teens inside running away.

Later, families reported that they believed a group of teens was also setting off heavy-duty fireworks around their neighborhoods in Gilbert.

A restitution hearing has been set for Jan. 24, 2025.
