TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Tuesday night marked a triumph for Former President Donald Trump and his supporters as the 45th U.S. president won the 2024 presidential election, becoming president-elect and defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, 78, is the oldest person ever to be elected president in U.S. history and becomes only the second U.S. president in history to serve non-consecutive terms in office after Grover Cleveland. As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Trump was leading Harris in the Electoral College with 295 votes to 226 votes, according to the Associated Press. Wednesday afternoon, Harris delivered a speech to supporters at her alma mater, Howard University, in Washington D.C. after calling Trump earlier in the day to concede the race. What played a crucial role in the electoral vote were the seven battleground states, including Georgia. The "blue wall" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which was seen as a pathway to victory for Harris, flipped to Trump in the 2024 race, helping push him over the goal-line of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. When looking at Florida, one of the states Trump netted in his win, the majority of Big Bend counties were called for Trump. Leon and Gadsden counties went to Harris. Miami-Dade County, one that which Democrats did very well in Florida for a long time, was a county where Donald Trump performed strong in. Meanwhile, Vice President Harris led Trump in Broward and Palm Beach counties and Orange counties. In Georgia, all of our South Georgia counties were called for Donald Trump, the president-elect having comfortable margins in many of the counties. Vice President Harris performed well in Atlanta and surrounding counties. As of 5:09 p.m., the two remaining states to be called by the Associated Press were Arizona and Nevada. Both Arizona and Nevada were two of the seven battleground states for the 2024 election. As of Wednesday afternoon, all three states were leaning towards President-elect Trump.
