Road worker critically injured after being struck by driver on I-75 in Detroit
A road worker is in critical condition after being struck by a driver while setting a flare pattern between construction vehicles on the highway Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The incident took place around 1:40 p.m. on southbound I-75 near Springwells Street in Southwest Detroit, according to Michigan State Police Second District on X .
A 71-year-old Kia sedan driver from Allen Park allegedly "entered the right lane and struck the worker," according to preliminary information from police. "The worker was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment of his critical injuries."
Pending investigation, roads are closed from I-96, near the Ambassador Bridge, down to Schaefer Highway, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
"The exit of Fort Street and Schaefer is where drivers can get back on," said MDOT spokesperson Diana Cross. "But because of that closure, traffic cannot get to the Ambassador Bridge using a freeway."
In order to get to the Ambassador Bridge, MDOT posted on X the following alternate routes:
Southbound I-75 drivers should exit to southbound Rosa Parks Boulevard, then take southbound M-85 (Fort Street).
Eastbound I-96 drivers should take the M-10/Rosa Parks exit, then head south on Rosa Parks Boulevard to southbound M-85.
The investigation has been ongoing for several hours, and the exact duration of the closure remains uncertain.
The victim's family is still being notified.
"We want to remind drivers to move over when they see construction vehicles on the side or in the roadway working," said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw. "The suspect that struck the worker stopped on scene after the crash."
Once the investigation is complete, an investigator's report will be submitted to the prosecutor's office.
