Jackson police working to combat homelessness
JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said the police department is working to combat the growing homeless issue in the city.
"The Jackson Police Department (JPD) is not tasked with eradicating the City of Jackson of the homelessness issue or the unhoused issue, but we are the one that is called to deal with it every single day," he said.

On Wednesday, Jackson police visited homeless encampments to see the conditions of those who live there and to lend a helping hand.
"I want to come out here, see these encampments, talk to these individuals, let my team know, you know, that we're here to help and assist them in helping in assisting the homeless population here in the City of Jackson. Whatever we can do, whatever resource is available to them, we want to make sure they know what they are and what they look like," said Wade.
The police chief said he knows residents want the issue under control, but he said the capital city has to help these individuals create a stable life.
Wade stated he would present a detailed plan to state lawmakers to gain additional resources to help with the issue.
