Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith To Retire Next Month Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue Chief Randy Smith has announced he will retire on Nov. 22TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue Chief Randy Smith announced on Wednesday that he will retire on Nov. 22, after working as a firefighter and emergency responder for four decades.
{p/p}Smith was first appointed fire chief by Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox in 2018 after serving as deputy fire chief for the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department.
Smith has been recognized several times for his dedication to the community and his leadership during critical events, including serving as the leader of Tuscaloosa's COVID-19 Incident Command team.
"It has been a tremendous honor serving the people of Tuscaloosa," Smith said. "I will be forever grateful to have been part of Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue and to have served with the amazing men and women that protect our community each day."
Maddox also praised Smith's leadership, saying TFR has navigated numerous weather and public safety challenges to ensure the safety of the community.
"Chief Smith has led Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue with distinction and conviction," Maddox said. "His calm and commanding guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic will be his lasting legacy."
