Two-vehicle crash causes gas leak, evacuation in southeast Colorado Springs Saturday, police say
Two people were injured and a home was evacuated on Saturday after a two-vehicle crash resulted in a damaged gas line, Colorado Springs police said.
The crash took place at about 2:50 p.m. at the intersection of Fountain Boulevard and Circle Drive on the city's east side, according to a police blotter entry.
Both drivers were taken to local hospitals and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators determined that a motorist, heading north on Circle "at a high rate of speed," ran the red light at Fountain and hit a westbound vehicle before jumping a curb, hitting a fence, and damaging a gas line, police said.
Because of the resulting gas leak, emergency personnel evacuated a home on Carlsbad Drive, northwest of the intersection. Colorado Springs Fire Department and Utilities crew were able to stop the leak and repair the damage, officials said.
Chase Jones, who is suspected of running the red light, was cited for several traffic violations and released, police said. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
