LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The University of Kentucky Police Department issued a message to students regarding campus safety on Thursday.

In an email to students, UK Police highlighted safety measures they have implemented this semester:

  • Increasing police patrols on North Campus.
  • Reviewing lighting and security cameras in the North Campus area.
  • Partnering with a professional campus security group, Allied Universal, to enhance security in and around residence halls across campus.
  • UKPD also announced additional measures they will take going forward, starting this weekend.

•An additional team of UK Police officers will be deployed by bike, foot and vehicle to patrol the North Campus area from 10 p.m.-4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. This team is in addition to the UKPD officers already patrolling North Campus regularly.

•They will install additional lighting — large temporary flood lights — on Winslow Street. They are assessing where to install additional permanent lighting, cameras and Blue Emergency Towers around this area.

•They will begin limiting access to garages and parking lots in the area — at The Cornerstone and at Good Samaritan Hospital.

•They will continue to evaluate these issues and solutions as we look into other safety enhancements for the future.

The department emphasized that student safety is their top priority. They are working with the City of Lexington to protect the community, both on and off campus.
