UNC Greensboro warms up for road trip with win over NC Wesleyan
The UNC Greensboro men's basketball team is packing its bags for a cross-country excursion this week, and it got a good sendoff on campus with a victory over NC Wesleyan.
On Thursday, the Spartans (2-1) go to Bloomington, Indiana, to play the currently unbeaten and 16th-ranked Hoosiers (3-0). After a return home to switch out some laundry, UNCG heads to Henderson, Nevada, for a tournament which includes Long Beach State, San Jose State and UTEP.
In the first of its seven games toi be played at Fleming Gym, UNCG went on a 9-0 run to begin the game and never faced a challenge after that as it took a 99-54 victory.
Miles Jones hit a 3-pointer and pushed the Spartans to a 16-6. A 7-2 run by the Bishops closed the gap to 18-13, but the Spartans respoinded with three straight 3-pointers to extend their edge to 27-13 en route to a 49-24 halftime lead. The lead would grow to as much as 30 points in the second half.
Akrum Ahemed had 16 points on 5 of 5 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Donovan Atwell scored 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the floor, and Kenyon Giles hit four of his five shots and added 11 points. Jones had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Next for Coach Mike Jones is for his team to take its play to the next level against a team from the Big Ten.
"The big thing is just getting us to be at a level five," Jones said. "For us, that means a championship level in everything that we do, whether it's effort or executive or pace on offense or details defensively."
