Union Omaha headed to USL League One semifinals after win over Richmond
Lagos Kunga turned chaos in front of his own net into a goal at the other end and helped take Union Omaha to USL League One semifinals.
Kunga capped an end-to-end stretch in the 51st minute by slotting a pass from Zeiko Lewis into the net for the only goal in Omaha's 1-0 win over Richmond Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.
Omaha will host Greenville Saturday at 4 p.m. for the second home semifinal in club history.
Kunga's goal started with Omaha keeper Rashid Nuhu tipping a Richmond shot off the cross bar and then a second shot the cross bar and eventually go headed out to Kunga, who quickly moved the ball into Omaha's offensive end on the dribble.
Kunga dropped a pass off to Lewis, who continued the ball forward and sent a pass back across to Kunga, who put his shot into the lower-right corner of the net.
"It was a crazy sequence with the two crossbars and then played the ball with a header, and all I knew is going forward," Kunga said. "And then I saw one of my teammates, played it to him.
"I was hoping he could get to it and give it back to me and he did, and I was there to finish it. It was amazing."
The game featured just three shots on goal, with Omaha having a 2-1 edge. Nuhu made one save for the shutout.
Omaha played without defender Mechack Jerome, who was injured in an explosion at his house in Bellevue Thursday evening. Union Omaha players wore armbands with words of support, and the crowd at Werner Park gave a standing ovation in the second minute to honor Jerome, who wears the No. 2 shirt.
