University of Arkansas launches new scholarship for Pell Grant, low-income students

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas launches a new scholarship intended to help Pell-Grant eligible and other low-income Arkansas students. It's called The Land of Opportunity Scholarship. The J.B. Hunt Foundation already gifted $100 million toward an overall funding goal of $200 million. The president of Tuskegee University in Alabama announced Monday that the school is being closed to outsiders and that its security chief has been fired in the wake of a mass shooting Sunday on campus. Mark Brown, president and CEO of the historically black university, announced the changes as the investigation of the mass shooting continued Monday and the local sheriff warned those responsible for the shooting that "we are going to find you." "The Tuskegee University community is heartbroken by what happened on our campus Sunday morning," Brown said during a news conference Monday afternoon. All have been pulled from the shelves of some Florida schools, according to the latest list compiled by the Florida Department of Education tallying books removed by local school districts. Recent changes to state law have empowered parents and residents to challenge school library books and required districts to submit an annual report to the state detailing which books have been restricted in their schools. Florida continues to lead the country in pulling books from school libraries, according to analyses by the American Library Association and the advocacy group PEN America. Teachers in three Massachusetts communities fighting for new contracts pushed forward with their demands Monday as parents braced for the possibility of more canceled classes on Tuesday. Teachers in Beverly and Gloucester voted Thursday to authorize a strike, and schools were closed Friday as teachers in both districts hit the picket line over pay, paid parental leave and other issues. School officials in Marblehead, about 16 miles (25.8 kilometers) north of Boston, have already announced schools would be closed on Tuesday and that no extracurricular activities or sports would take place.
